Following the last fire a consultation with Southend residents was undertaken. The outcome was that the Council would seek to develop the Pier as a location for mixed enjoyment based around a culutural and maritime theme. There was no real wish to see major rides or amusements on the Pier.
The Council has also invested in the Pier to restore the fire damage to the decking and station and is now extending the glass windbreaks at the Shore end.
There will always be ongoing repair and restoration works to a structure of this age in this location.
The next step is to take forward plans for the far end based upon the winning suibmission but perhaps modified to suit our pocket. The Conservative lead Council has put £3m into the budget for this work.
